Fresh out of the box my new album! Feels real good to hold "Fingers" in my hand. Last year on the day after my birthday I asked my hero Peter Case if he would produce my next record. He answered with one word, "Absolutely." The past year has been one of magic, perseverance, learning, and going beyond what I thought was possible. We made a good one! Looking forward to sharing it with you.
Peter Case is a three-time Grammy nominee and one of the great songwriters, singers, and players of all time. His production is stellar. Sheldon Gomberg, who won the Grammy this year for producing the best blues album ("Get Up!" by Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite), engineered and we recorded at his Carriage House studio. David Steele, who has toured with John Prine, Steve Earle, and Lucinda Williams, played guitar and mandolin. Don Heffingtion, who has played with Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Lone Justice, and many more, played drums. Greg Leisz, who has a resume a mile long including 10 years as k d lang's musical director, played dobro. Plus the great Cindy Wasserman singing with me.
Peter gave it his all. The man is a genius without doubt. His arrangement ideas, songwriting tips, recording experience, ability to communicate musical ideas easily to musicians (especially me), and commitment to search for the soul of each song, sometimes line by line, made the recording come alive beyond what I could imagine. Peter played piano on three songs, organ on one, and sang back up with Cindy on a few. Me like a little kid at a candy store watching him work. Giants walk among us and I am forever grateful one reached out to help me.
I sang my heart out. It was the most intense musical experience of my life, but also so very easy. Playing with such a great band brought my game up a few notches. I am grateful for that too.
Ten new original songs on their way! Get ready for some "Guitar Prayer," "Mail Pouch Chew Tobacco," "Death Week In Memphis," "Where Bluebirds Sing," and many more. I even have one this time called "Political Song For Waylon Jennings To Sing." How about that?
"Fingers" will be released in the Fall. I can hardly wait for you to hear it.
